Prof. Dr. Işık Akgün was born in Istanbul in 1957. He went to Istanbul University Medical Faculty between 1974-1980. In 1981 he started his consultancy training in Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty Orthopedics and Traumatology Department and became a Consultant in 1985. Under the supervision of Prof Dr Kemal Bayraktar his consultancy thesis was “Shoulder arthrography in rotator cuff lesions”. The same year he received training at Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center in USA and at Orthopaedische Klinik St. Vincenz Hospital in Germany.
In 1989 he started working as the head assistant in the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department. In 1991 he stayed at “The General Hospital Birmingham” as a “Clinical Observer”, and as a “Visiting Fellow” in Germany in “St. Josef-Stift Hospital”. On October 15, 1993 he became “Associate Professor”. The same year he won “International Arthroscopy Association” award. In 1995 visited “University of Technology” in Australia as a “Invited Visitor” and in 1996 “SCOI” the USA as a “Visiting Fellow”. He continued his training in 1997 in “University of Pittsburgh – Medical Center” in the USA and in 1998 as a “Visiting Fellow” in “Beth Israel Medical Center”.
On February 28, 1999 he was appointed as a “Professor” in Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty.
Until today he has received many occupational training in various universities and hospitals in European Countries and the USA.
He is married and has two children.
