Carlos Spottorno

He was born in Budapest in 1971. He was raised in Rome, Paris and Madrid. He began his carreer as an art director in an advertising agency. In 2001 he switched into professional photography. Since then he has combined his own self-produced, documentary long term projects with professional assignments both editorial and commercial.

He was a featured photographer at Reportage by Getty between 2007-2014, and he cooperates with Tesauro for large commercial projects. He had five books published: History Seekers (Blur Ediciones), China Western (La Fabrica), Philosophia Naturalis (self published), La Hora del Recreo – Break Time (Lünwerg) and The Pigs, winner of the Kassel Photobook Award 2013, shortlisted at the Aperture Foundation Paris Photo Photobook Award 2013, and the only Mention of the Jury at PhotoEspaña Photobook Award. The Pigs was selected by Time magazine as one of the most relevant photobooks of 2013. In recognition for his work, he has recieved other awards including a World Press Photo in 2003, YIPPA in 2011, American Photography 24, 26,27 and 30. He was a finalist for a Visa d’Or in 2008, the European Publishers Award in 2009 and 2013, RM Photobook Award in 2012. He was a nominee for the Magnum Emergency Fund Foundation in 2014, and he was awarded the Lacritique.org Award at Voies Off Arles festival.

His photos were published by National Geographic España, El País Semanal, D Magazine, Marie Claire France and OjodePez among others. His work is part of the permanent collection of Foto Colectania Foundation in Barcelona and the PhotoBook Museum in Cologne.

Besides his personal and editorial work, he has shot campaigns both in still photo and video for clients like Nike, Vodafone, Movistar. He was in the selection panel for the Kassel Photobook Awards 2014, and a jury for the Dummys Award 2014. He also gives lectures and workshops based on his own experience as a professional photographer and documentary video maker.
